The breathtaking beauty of the ghats of Banaras has always been a muse to the artists, so it is not a surprise that several students of Fine Art of the Banaras Hindu University and other colleges, are often seen on the various ghats, seeking inspiration for their work there. Thronged by travellers , the activity on the ghats gives these budding artists several interesting characters to be included in their work. These students also display their work, mainly in water colour, on the ghats which is often bought by travellers visiting the place, thereby giving these youngsters a greater visibility as an artist. "We are paid between Rs 250 to Rs 300 each for a portrait with a single shading ," says Chanda Singh , a student. Apart from getting a creative impulse, these students are able to earn some pocket money by making portraits of tourists, who are really keen to get them made.
