Bandh evokes mixed response across Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: The Bharat Bandh call against the SC/ST Act evoked mixed response in various cities of the state.In Allahabad, shops in several markets remained closed but no incident of violence was reported. Lawyers also raised slogans against SC/ST Act.Life was paralyzed in Agra and its neighbouring districts as protesters took to streets. Police had to resort to lathicharge and use tear gas to disperse protesters. Shopkeepers in Civil Lines, Katra and Chowk did not open their shops.The district police had made strict security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident and kept a close watch.A group of protesters stopped a train near Prayag railway station and climbed on its engine, delaying it by around 20 minutes.In Kanpur, hundreds of upper caste people staged protest as shops and establishments remained closed. Protesters stopped Agra Intercity passenger train at Panki railway station.Various prominent markets remained shut and traders demanded that persons from upper caste should not be arrested without proper investigation.In Varanasi, protesters staged demonstration and burnt effigies at the gate of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, BHU, UP College, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith and made shopkeepers pull down shutters in Orderly Bazar, Maldahiya, Sigra, Lahurabir, Lanka and Teliabagh but the markets opened after some time.Protesters blocked the Gorakhpur-Varanasi national highway for three hours.In Kushinagar, protesters burnt an effigy of government and blocked road.In Deoria, students staged a protest at Sant Vinoba Bhave Degree College and handed over a memorandum to district magistrate.
