VARANASI: A middle-aged widow was attacked with a sharp-edged weapon and thrown out of a moving truck as she foiled the driver's bid to rape her while returning from Varanasi.The incident was reported from Alinagar area of Chandauli on Saturday night. The woman who was travelling with her 14-year-old son was admitted to the trauma centre of BHU in Varanasi. Her son was rescued by the police. An FIR was lodged against driver Khushdil Maurya and the truck was seized. However, the driver managed to escape.Some passersby noticed a woman lying in a pool of blood near a petrol pump in Alinagar area when they rushed her to a hospital in DDU Nagar in the wee hours on Sunday and informed the police.Inspector Alinagar AN Singh said: "The woman is a native of Sonbhadra where she runs a tea kiosk after the death of her husband. As her husband's pension was pending for past few months she along with her 14-year-old son had gone to Pahadia area in Varanasi to know the reason behind it."The inspector added: "When she was returning home, Maurya, who was familiar to her, offered her a lift. On reaching Alinagar they all had dinner at a roadside hotel. Later, Maurya took her inside the container and tried to rape her. However, the woman foiled his bid and the driver attacked her with a knife and threw her out of the vehicle. On not getting a proper reply about her mother's whereabouts, the son raised an alarm. It was then, that Maurya stopped the truck and fled."
