Bringing some melody into the lives of the inmates of Central Jail, Varanasi, a music concert featuring singer Abhijit Ghoshal of song 'Jashn Hai Jeet Ka' fame was held organised recently. The inmates gathered in large numbers to witness the live performance. Some sat on the ground of the huge lawn of the jail while the rest preferred to stand to enjoy the event that kick-started with a Ganesh Vandana followed by the iconic devotional song 'Allah Tero Naam.'(L-R) Ambrish Gaur (Senior Jail Superintendent, Central Jail), DP Singh (Deputy Jailor Central Jail) with Abhijit Ghoshal (BCCL/ Unmesh Pandey)Despite a distance between the singer and the audience, an immediate connect could be felt between the two as Bollywood songs began to fill in the air. 'Chhoo Kar Mere Mann Ko','Mere Naina Saawan Bhadon', 'Kuchh Toh Log Kahenge', were some of the soulful numbers that Abhijit rendered. Turning the mood peppy, he sang 'Mere Sapano Ki Raani' too. "Yeh sab ka gaana hai, aap sab bhi gaiyye," he coaxed the inmates to sing along.Prisoners dancing at the event (BCCL/ Unmesh Pandey)Later, the singer was joined in by Ambrish Gaur, Senior Jail Superintendent, and DP Singh, Deputy Jailor, who crooned songs like 'Chingari Koi Bhadke' along with him. This was welcomed by the inmates with a loud applause.(L) DIG Jail BS Yadav (R) Ashok and Rajesh Gaur (BCCL/ Unmesh Pandey)A medley of Mohd Rafi songs followed next. The real fun however began as the singer crooned some Holi songs, inviting the inmates to dance. Song 'Rang Barse' made one of the inmates move to the beats while seated on the ground but as other Holi songs like 'Jai Jai Shiv Shankar', 'Khelenge Hum Holi', 'Balam Pichkari' were belted out there was no stopping the inmates who stepped out on the ground to dance with gay abandon. With party songs like 'Mein Jat Yamala Pagla Deewana', 'Toh Chaalu Ho Pyajama Party' and 'Ohh La La' adding to the fun.Prisoners dancing at the event (BCCL/ Unmesh Pandey)Addressing the audience Abhijit, said, "The Holi songs reminded me of my days in Allahabad where these songs were an essential part of the festival. Though I have held concerts across the country, there have been few occasions where I had the opportunity to sing in UP, so today it was like homecoming."(L) Javed Ali (R) Dr Abhishek (BCCL/ Unmesh Pandey)Some of the inmates also got the chance to be part of the performance as accompanists. Javed Ali, a murder convict, who is pursuing Diploma course in vocal music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti , Allahabad, was on the harmonium. "Music has always been a passion for me and has in fact helped me to complete my sentence so far," he said. Other inmates like Rajesh Gaur and Ashok were on dholak and tabla, respectively, during the performance."The idea behind holding such events is to break the monotony in the lives of the inmates. We ensure that there is enough entertainment in their life for which we organise different events including sports activity and musical programmes," said BS Yadav, DIG , Jail, Varanasi range.
