VARANASI: Shamsher Alam, a sub-inspector posted at Lohta police station, was suspended after being caught in a viral video demanding bribe from a woman to arrest the accused who had allegedly harassed her sexually.After the video went viral, SSP Anand Kulkarni suspended the SI on Monday night and ordered a probe into the matter. Kulkarni said on Tuesday that the SI could be seen collecting money from the woman in the viral video. "CO Sadar will probe the matter and submit a report to me after which future course of action will be decided," he added.On September 18, 2018, a woman had lodged a case of rape against one Nabeen Qureshi, police said, adding, the investigation had been given to Alam. It is alleged that the woman kept running from pillar to post to ensure arrest of the accused but in vain.According to reports, about a week after lodging an FIR, investigating officer Alam met her at Lohta police station where he allegedly asked her to pay a bribe if she wanted the accused to be arrested. The woman asked him to collect money from her residence. When he reached her house, some members of the woman's family made a video clip. However, the accused was not arrested. The video, which was recorded in September last, was made viral on social media on Monday. The SSP examined it and later ordered suspension of Alam.
