Deoria voters credit Deoraha Baba’s blessings for Indira’s win in 1980

The present Mahant of Deoraha Baba Ashram, Shyam Sundar Das , recalls, “In 1978, Indira Gandhi came here and took blessings of Baba. Later, Rajiv Gandhi and his wife Sonia also visited Deoraha Baba on the eve of 1989 elections. He came to Deoria from Vrindavan and used to live on a 12-foot high wooden platform on the bank of river. People across castes and religion came to him from far and wide and considered him as their spiritual guru. Baba left the world on May 19, 1990.

GORAKHPUR: After imposing Emergency in the country, Indira Gandhi suffered defeat in 1977 general elections and was even imprisoned on the charges of corruption, however, she regained power and became prime minister again in 1980. People of Deoria, however, credit her victory to her visit to Yogiraj Deoraha Baba in the year 1978 and recall that the saint had blessed her.In December last year, CM Yogi Adityanath had laid the foundation stone of a medical college in Deoria and named it Deoraha Baba Medical College.Deoraha Baba Ashram is situated on the banks of Saryu river at Mael, around 38 km from Deoria district headquarters. The present Mahant of Deoraha Baba Ashram, Shyam Sundar Das , recalls, “In 1978, Indira Gandhi came here and took blessings of Baba. She changed her party’s symbol from cow and calf to open palm and won the election.” “During her meeting, Baba gave her blessing by raising his hands and said ‘Yahi haath tumhara bhala karega’ and it seems that she took it seriously and made open hand her party’s symbol,” he added.Deoraha Baba was a sage also known as ageless Yogi and Siddha Yogi. He came to Deoria from Vrindavan and used to live on a 12-foot high wooden platform on the bank of river. People across castes and religion came to him from far and wide and considered him as their spiritual guru. Later, Rajiv Gandhi and his wife Sonia also visited Deoraha Baba on the eve of 1989 elections. Baba left the world on May 19, 1990.
