Varanasi: The Covid-19 pandemic has severely hit medical infrastructure across the nation. The rising number of Covid-19 cases has not only created a scarcity of beds for the patients infected by the virus but also for those who have non-Covid medical emergencies.

In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a man on Monday lost his battle with life while running from pillar to post trying to find a hospital that would provide him with treatment. To make matters worse, after he died, his mother had to ferry his body on an e-rickshaw as no ambulance was available.

A resident of Jaunpur, Vinay Singh had come to Varanasi for emergency medical care for a kidney ailment. He first went to Banaras Hindu University. After being denied medical treatment due to a lack of non-Covid beds, he went to a private hospital. But even there he was unable to get medical care and scummed to his ailment right in front of his mother.

After he passed away, Vinay’s mother Chandrakala tried to hire an ambulance to take his body back home. But failed. She had to hire an e-rickshaw for the purpose. The gut-wrenching visuals were captured on camera. The photos of the mother ferrying her son’s body on e-rickshaw have gone viral on social media, where people are condemning the lack of medical facilities in Uttar Pradesh.
