VARANASI: As the festival of colours `Holi` is fast approaching, the city markets are a profusion of colour, dotted with piles of red, yellow and green and different kinds of pichkaris bearing cartoon characters and faces of political leaders. The markets and make-shift stalls are flooded with Modi pichkaris bearing photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi`s newly elected Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal. Pichkaris with cartoon characters like Ninja, Pikachu, Angry Birds, Chhota Bheem, Mickey Mouse, Doraemon, Pokemon, Shin Chan and so on in the range of Rs 50 to 500 are in high demand among the kids.

" The pichkaris range between Rs. 50 and Rs. 350 while pouches of the herbal colours range between Rs.

50 and Rs. 100. The sales have been on for quite sometime with people also buying them as return gifts for the birthday celebrations of their kids.

The Holi shopping began from February 15, he added. Despite of Modi`s `Make in India`, Chinese products have also invaded the markets with attractive, colourful and inexpensive Holi items. "An array of Chinese mini bombs, colourful `chatai` (cracker), and colour smokes ranging between Rs.

50 and Rs. 100 are selling like hot cakes," said Ashok Gogia, a shopkeeper at Sigra. He said that the Indian manufacturers are giving stiff competition to Chinese products.

Displaying Holi items brought from Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi, he said, "As the name suggests, with `Ice Throw` one can enjoy colourful snowfights without visiting any hill station. Then there is this, `Holi Huddang` (horns) of over 8 varieties which the youngsters can use and honk on the streets shouting `Holi Hai`." These range from Rs.

100 to Rs. 150. Herbal and organic colours are also getting increasingly popular and despite being costlier than chemical colours, there is a good demand for them.

"This year we have bottle-shaped herbal colourful sprays which spreads the various colours all around. Priced at Rs. 100, these are a hit," said Gogia.

Available also in silver and black, these herbal colour packs wash off easily from the skin and can be used by everyone. But, it is slightly heavy for small children to wield. The more adventurous ones are going for a new pichkari called `Safety Umbrella Guard` priced at Rs.

250 that has water outlet at its tip, and protects the person from getting wet hence, an ideal instrument to play the kind of pranks Holi is meant for. .
