APSRTC to turn old buses into mobile toilets

What should State-owned public transport corporations do with their ageing fleet? The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has come up with the novel idea of redesigning them into mobile toilets, which is also helping the State in achieving its Swachh Bharat and Open Defecation Free goals. Civic bodies such as municipalities, municipal corporations and panchayats, and NGOs, can buy the mobile toilets from the APSRTC and use them during festivals and public meetings to maintain sanitation. Toilets were arranged for men and women separately after modifying the interiors of the bus. Instead of selling old buses for scrap, we plan to redesign them at a cost of ?2 lakh each,” said APSRTC’s Managing Director M. Malakondaiah.

Water storage is arranged on the roof and waste is collected underneath, which is convenient for disposal and cleaning, corporation officials said. “Recently, we kept the model of the mobile toilet near the venue of Shivaratri festivities at Kotappakonda in the Guntur district and many appreciated it. Instead of selling old buses for scrap, we plan to redesign them at a cost of ?2 lakh each,” said APSRTC’s Managing Director M. Malakondaiah.
