Civic body plans to overhaul canals

In order to put an end to the problem permanently, the civic body is now going to engage a consultant firm which would assist the civic body through the project, according to municipal officials. Very recently the civic body has put up meshes on all the outlets to stop plastic and other solid waste from flowing into the canals. Even before the canal beautification proposals came up years ago, regulation of flow of sewage into the three canals had been a necessity as many downstream villages depended on the canals for irrigation and drinking water. While most of the canal bunds were beautified in the past few years, efforts to curb sewage outlets into the canals from several residential colonies turned ineffective. Very recently the civic body has put up meshes on all the outlets to stop plastic and other solid waste from flowing into the canals. While the initiative has worked, the flow of sewage is still on and couldn’t be stopped due to various reasons, including lack of proper underground drainage system and misuse of side drains in colonies. The proposal was dropped later as there were no takers for the project. In order to put an end to the problem permanently, the civic body is now going to engage a consultant firm which would assist the civic body through the project, according to municipal officials. The civic body, a couple of days ago, called for proposals (Request for Proposal) from interested firms across the country. As per the proposal, the consultant firm should initially conduct a feasibility study and make necessary estimates. As part of the project, only treated sewage water as per the standards of Pollution Control Board would be let into the canals.
