City comes to a standstill receives 62 excess rainfall this monsoon

Vijayawada: Continuous rains were reported across Krishna district and Vijayawada city for the last two days. “The rains led to huge traffic snarls in the city and we have been at the receiving end. We were stuck at Nirmala Convent signal for almost ten minutes in the rain due to the traffic jam. This problem has been there for several years and officials are simply giving false promises on the construction of a protective wall,” said M Venkataratnamma, a resident of Moghalrajpuram. “Boulders rolling off the hills after getting dislodged due to rain have become a major concern for us in the monsoon season and we have not slept the entire night out of fear.

Vijayawada: Continuous rains were reported across Krishna district and Vijayawada city for the last two days. Vijayawada Urban registered 4.5 centimetres rainfall on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, which is the highest rainfall for this monsoon season.Mutchinapalle in Reddigudem mandal of Krishna district received 10.3 cm rain on Sunday and Kalidhindi, Reddigudem recorded 6.3 cm rains, which caused severe inundation in the area.Huge rains in catchment areas of Munneru sparked hopes of a good sowing season with farmers waiting to start Kharif plantations. Krishna district collector B Lakshmikantham who monitored the progress of the monsoon across the district directed officials to take necessary measures to prevent inundation in low-lying areas.Water levels at Prakasam barrage which increased in recent times with Pattiseema water have now received huge inputs with rains in uplands of Nandigama, Kanchikacherla, Jaggayyapeta and other parts of the district.City roads witnessed huge traffic on Sunday morning with rain and people facing problems waiting in traffic. “The rains led to huge traffic snarls in the city and we have been at the receiving end. We were stuck at Nirmala Convent signal for almost ten minutes in the rain due to the traffic jam. Traffic police should focus on regulating traffic in a better way,” said K Naveen Kumar, a marketing employee.The Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD’s) prediction of more rain in the coming two days due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has left residents living in hilly terrains in the city a worried lot. “Boulders rolling off the hills after getting dislodged due to rain have become a major concern for us in the monsoon season and we have not slept the entire night out of fear. No officials visited our place. This problem has been there for several years and officials are simply giving false promises on the construction of a protective wall,” said M Venkataratnamma, a resident of Moghalrajpuram.
