Vijayawada: Many municipal and private schools in the city are facing problems due to the shortage of textbooks even a month after reopening. The municipal schools, which saw huge rush for admissions after the facelift given by civic authorities, are also waiting for uniforms and other accessories. The reforms by the school education department to promote government schools are getting degraded because of the education wing’s poor planning. However, the education wing has directed district-level officers to take necessary steps on arranging the textbooks before the beginning of the academic year.In reality, both the district administration and education wing of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) failed to provide the books required even after the beginning of classes. “I have put my two kids in municipal schools, considering the experienced teaching staff and developed infrastructure there. Though these schools reduce the financial burden on parents, the students are facing problems due to the delay in distribution of uniforms and textbooks that are mostly meant for classes VI and VIII,” said MV Mohan Kumar a private employee. The student unions claim that the problem persists in both the government and private schools. However, the managements of private schools manage to get the books from various stores. “The state government turned the municipal and government schools into English medium ones but failed to print the necessary number of textbooks. Till now, around 40 per cent of the students in municipal schools have not received textbooks, while the distribution of two sets of free uniforms also did not start. Besides, the class IX students are waiting too for their bicycles,” said Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) president A. Ravichandra.“We have already started agitation along with other student unions, demanding special care for the municipal schools. We will intensify the stir, if the officials concerned fail to provide textbooks within a week,” he added. The education wing officials in VMC said that there has been a shortage of specific textbooks and they are taking measures to solve the problem.
