While enrollments in civil engineering have fallen by nearly 4,000 the last year, the placements have increased by nearly 250. While more than 13,000 students from the branch were placed in the year 2015-16, the number fell to 12,662 in 2017-18. Chemical engineering also shows a decline in the number of enrollments and placements over the past three years both at the state and national levels, according to the survey. Similar trend is seen in electrical engineering this year. VIJAYAWADA: The annual report of All India Council for Technical Education for the year 2017-18 revealed that electronics and communications engineering (ECE) is the most opted BTech course in colleges across Andhra Pradesh However, this is contrary to the national trend where mechanical engineering is most preferred next to computer science The preference of an engineering branch has a direct correlation with the placements at a national-level.

Over 144 hundred mechanical engineering students have secured placements in India and this is highest compared with electronics engineering, which comes in the third position of the list with only 1,00, 383 placements in the same year. However, the electronics and communication continues to be at the top in providing placements for the students in Andhra Pradesh. While more than 13,000 students from the branch were placed in the year 2015-16, the number fell to 12,662 in 2017-18. Yet, the branch still records the higher job offers than the computer science and mechanical branches, which are second and third preferences of the students respectively in the state. It is to be noted that the less preferred branches of civil engineering and electrical engineering are showing a steady increase in the number of placements while the number of students enrolling in these courses is showing a decline. While enrollments in civil engineering have fallen by nearly 4,000 the last year, the placements have increased by nearly 250. Similar trend is seen in electrical engineering this year. Chemical engineering also shows a decline in the number of enrollments and placements over the past three years both at the state and national levels, according to the survey. However, the percentage of chemical engineering students who got placements is on par with other branches. At a national-level, it is the civil engineering branch that showed lowest percentage of placements when compared to the other branches at 20.68.At the state-level, the branch recorded only 17.46 per cent placements, despite a steady increase in the number of jobs compared to last year. While mechanical engineering has the third highest placement percentage in the country, the branch only stood at the fifth position with 24.78 per cent in AP compared to electronics and communication, which had the highest of 35.2 per cent. However, a significant decline is seen in the total number of placements across all the branches where more than half of the students are not able to get offer letters at the end of the four-year professional course. This trend is seen to be similar with all other states in the country these days.
