West Godavari reels under flood fury, roads damaged

Eluru: Crops in 6,000 hectares have been inundated due to the fury of Yerra Kaluva in West Godavari, while the flood waters from Thammileru spoilt crops in 400 acres. Bhimavaram received around 278 mm rainfall, while K Narayana Palem and Jeelugumilli received 271 mm and 218 mm rains in the last 24 hours. West Godavari district collector Katamaneni Bhaskar said such heavy rains did not pound in the past 30 years as about 35 to 40 cm rains have been recorded in just eight hours a day. More than 150 houses were damaged completely in the district due to the flood.Around 70 damaged houses are located alone at Chodavaram village, which was completely flooded. The bund of Polavaram right main canal was breached.Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has conducted review meeting with the West Godavari district collector Katamaneni Bhaskar and directed him to submit the reports on crops and other damages in West Godavari.Civil supplies minister Prathipati Pulla Rao who has visited the flood affected areas in the West Godavari district on Tuesday said that the roads worth Rs 250 crore were damaged in the district.

More than 150 houses were damaged completely in the district due to the flood.Around 70 damaged houses are located alone at Chodavaram village, which was completely flooded. The outflow from Thammileru is 10,000 cusecs, while the inflow is 5,000 cusecs. After heavy rains, water is spilling on to most of the districts in the district. District SP M Ravi Prakash has inspected Gundugoluno-Kovvur road, which has been waterlogged and the road bridge in Gandepalli and Veeravaram villages that have been washed away by the flood. According to him, around 12,000 people who belong to 2,037 families have been shifted to 32 rehabilitation centres, which were set up in the district. He said that the food condition is severe in agency mandals of Buttayagudem, Jeelugumilli, Koyyalagudem, Jangareddi Gudem, Polavaram and Velerupadu. Bhimavaram received around 278 mm rainfall, while K Narayana Palem and Jeelugumilli received 271 mm and 218 mm rains in the last 24 hours. West Godavari district collector Katamaneni Bhaskar said such heavy rains did not pound in the past 30 years as about 35 to 40 cm rains have been recorded in just eight hours a day. He has clarified that it is not possible to release flood water to Godavari as second warning is in force in the river.He predicted that the situation in Thammileru would be normal in next 48 hours, while Yerra Kaluva would take 72 hours and Godavari four days to become normal.
