Tirupati: A man and his mother committed suicide at Tirupati on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. B Gangadhar (27), a contract employee of Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam (TTD), who was married three months ago, hanged self at his home.Police suspected that family disputes led the man to take the extreme step of ending his life. The Alipiri inspector B Chandra Sekhar said that Gangadhar had issues with his wife after she became pregnant.He wanted his wife to go for abortion as he was not financially sound at the moment to take the responsibility of a child.But his wife did not agree to his proposal and left for her parents’ home. Depressed over the decision taken by his wife and other family reasons, Gangadhar killed himself in the wee hours of Wednesday. He was noticed by his mother B Kumari who also works as a TTD contract employee.With the help of neighbours, she rushed him to SVR Ruia Hospital for treatment but the doctors at Ruia declared him as brought dead.Kumari who was held responsible for the death of her son also took the same step and hanged to a tree in the hospital premises. Both the suicides reflect the plight of the TTD contract employees, said the colleagues of the deceased.The general secretary of contract employees association, T Subramanyam said that the contract employees are being exploited with meagre salaries.It was the long pending demand of the employees to pay reasonable salary but the board did not agree even though the workers are taking away their lives, he rued. Police registered a case under section 174 of CrPC and are investigating the matter.
