But more importantly, positive energy has been witnessed across as many pandals opted for environmentally friendly idols this year.Even the number of pandals has increased this year as compared to the previous year. there was a steep downfall in the number of pandals last year, but yet again there has been a substantial increase this year.This year, the city police cleared permissions for 1,572 applicants. Last year the number stood at 1,525 and while in 2016 it was 1,563. Though there is no official calculation from any government agency as to how many clay idols have been installed this year, the general observation from VMC and police officials is that this year more than 50 per cent of the total idols installed are made of clay. A senior officer who was supervising the immersion of idols told that about 70 per cent of the idols immersed on the first day evening was clay idols.Though the number of clay Ganesh idols has increased among individuals, Plaster of Paris (POP) still dominates the pandals set up at the community level.Easy availability, cost-effectiveness and ease of handling make POP idols is still the choice of makers and also for the organisers who prefer idols that are big in size. These organisers have been reluctant to take clay idols as they are difficult to handle when compared to POP made. M Sambasiva Rao from Poranki said, “We planned for clay idol this year but could not find one in our budget as the cost of clay idol of the same size as of Plaster of Paris is substantially more. Next year we will plan better to install clay idol.”
