State declared 296 mandals drought hit in kharif season

He said that Chittoor, Anantapur and Kurnool received deficit rainfall, while Kadapa received scanty rainfall leading to the severe drought. Efforts were on to provide fodder for the cattle in these mandals, he said.The minister informed the House that the government had appointed special officers for these drought hit mandals for mitigation measures. Chinarajappa said that the state had, on August 21 this year, written to the central government seeking Rs 1,079 crore from the NDRF funds for the drought mitigation measures. He listed out water harvesting measures, including farm ponds, Neeru-Chettu programme, and saving measures for crops. Stating that the south-west monsoon had failed in Rayalaseema, Chinarajappa said the region received 31.6% less rainfall compared to the previous year.He listed out a number of initiatives by the state government for drought mitigation.
