The semi-underground garbage bins unit inaugurated on Tuesday near Nimmathota Centre in Vijayawada. | Photo Credit: HAND OUT more-in Another smart and semi-underground garbage bin unit built by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation as part of its eco-friendly waste management concept was inaugurated by Mayor Koneru Sreedhar on Tuesday at Nimmathota Centre in Moghalprajpuram. SMS alert The unit consists of four bins that can hold 1.5 tonnes of garbage each. The vertical bins are placed in such a way that only about 30 % of them with lids are above the ground. The civic body installed similar units at two locations more than a year ago and found the project to be viable. Municipal Commissioner J. Nivas said that as many as eight more units would be built at eight locations of the city at a cost of ?64 lakh with the funds provided by the Swachh Andhra Corporation. Mr. Nivas said that the bins are capable of sending an SMS alert to the designated officials when 80 % of their capacity is full. Mr. Sreedhar said that the smart bins are designed to keep the surroundings clean and called upon the public to use them properly. Swachh Andhra Corporation executive vice-chairman C.L. Venkata Rao and MLA B. Umamaheswara Rao were among those present.
