Guntur: A senior official in the engineering wing of Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) is allegedly attending duties in an inebriated condition. The issue is creating a flutter in the GMC as the official holds a top position, handling developmental works involving several crore of money.The junior level staff in the department rued that they are scared of appearing before the top official who comes to office drunk in the morning. The staffers said that they can neither deny the instructions given by the drunk official nor go in person to get files cleared.However, the boozing habit of the senior official has made things easy for the contractors and field level engineers as they can get favours without much trouble. They are reportedly meeting the senior official at a private guest house and pleasing him with several brands of his choice to get their bills cleared. “His conduct is highly objectionable and goes against the service rules. We are seriously contemplating to lodge a complaint with the top authorities,” said a woman official in the wing.It has been alleged that the senior official is not even attending the grievance day despite knowing that the commissioner himself would head the session. In fact, majority of the grievances being received from the public are related to the engineering wing and the absence of the top official in such sessions is leaving the GMC administration red-faced.In fact, the commissioner Shrikesh B Lathkar had expressed his displeasure over the functioning of the engineering wing several times in the last four months after seeing the lackluster performance of the department.The state government posted the official to lead the engineering wing following the sudden shift of several top officials after the outbreak of diarrhea in April. “The performance of the engineering wing is so bad and no one in the department seems to be responsible towards for the public. After failing to motivate the engineering top brass, I have reviewed the progress of the projects with the commissioner himself,” city legislator Modugula Venugopala Reddy of TDP told TOI. TDP division level leaders in the city were also wondering as to how a person with no good track record was posted in the crucial wing at GMC. They are of the view that the city requires a dynamic official to take the projects ahead and make the public feel comfortable with the development.
