Infra deficit at city airport, runway expansion works hit logjam

Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Airport, which is witnessing a progressive growth in passenger traffic, is still facing problems with poor infrastructure. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) had proposed to complete parking and runway expansion works by the end of October, but later extended the deadline to November 30 as the state government failed to hand over the land.Around 1,870 meter long old runway was insufficient for the landing and take-off of the huge aircraft and AAI started works of expanding the runway to 2,286 meters in 2015.Krishna district collector B Lakshmikantham is conducting coordination meetings with various departments twice every month. Officials who set a target to complete the land acquisition by the end of August failed due to severe opposition from the plot owners of Allapuram, Ajjapuram and other villages, while district administration had come forward to give land for compensation.The AAI is requesting the state government to divert the Eluru Canal as it is not advised to construct the runway on a canal and collector Lakshmikantham directed irrigation department to make necessary proposals.Officials of AAI said that they are ready to speed up runway expansion works and waiting for the revenue department to hand over the land.
