Vijayawada: Teaching methods and curriculum in schools need to be updated as the field of Information and Technology (IT) is growing by leaps and bounds. But the implementation of new teaching methods and evaluation systems is having poor acceptance from parents who need to change their mindsets, teachers think. They say that most of the parents till want their wards to be evaluated on the basis of written examinations.“We face problems, especially with the parents who are staunch supporters of rote system of learning and memorising, which they had practiced during their school days. We also come across parents who insist on conducting more written examinations,” said Rama Rani, principal of a private school. Most schools, both private and government, have adopted the XSEED model of teaching, which included hands- on learning techniques encouraging children to analyse what they study and also to be creative. The new continuous assessment system, where the performance of students is assessed on a daily basis, is one more reason why majority of the parents seem to get anxious with new system.“We get regular visits from the parents asking why their son has been graded less or insisting on taking retests. We try our best to convince them that one bad performance has little effect on the overall grading. But this part is exhausting as many parents tend to put pressure on the teachers,” said Ramakrishna, biology teacher in a private school. B Suresh Kumar, principal of a private school in Ajit Singh Nagar, insists that a discussion with parents at the beginning of the academic year would solve the problems. “There are some parents, who raise questions about the teaching methods. But, when we take time and explain the importance of changing to digital method of teaching and of the project works, they tend not to intervene again,” he said, adding that active participation of parents in student’s education makes kids more interested in works.
