AP DGP denies snooping charges

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh police said on Tuesday that officials of its intelligence wing were on official duty in Telangana related to maoist activity and had nothing to do with money distribution and snooping ahead of the assembly elections in the neighbouring Telugu state.Responding to the letter from Telangana chief electoral officer Rajat Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP) RP Thakur made it clear that the intelligence wing sleuths were in Telangana to track the movement of Maoists.The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Telanagana, Rajat Kumar, had sought an explanation from Andhra Pradesh DGP within 48 hours over a complaint he received from TRS leaders stating that six police personnel were distributing money to prospective voters and were caught by locals in two separate incidents at Dharmapuri and Mancherial It was learnt from sources that in his reply to Rajat Kumar, the DGP confirmed that the personnel caught were intelligence officials from AP, but denied the charges of snooping and distribution.He also pointed out that even in the video that was sent by the election commission, no money was seen, or there was no evidence to suggest the police personnel were involved in money distribution.Sources at the DGP's office told TOI that as part of the surveillance on Maoists, intelligence officials can go anywhere in the country, including Telangana.
