Vijayawada: Despite the state government bringing Penamaluru under Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Authority (APCRDA) and a real estate boom, many riverside dwellers are still waiting for houses of their own—a big promise that TDP made to win the last elections.In 2014, TDP’s Bode Prasad recorded a thumping win by a margin of 33,448 votes--the biggest win for the ruling party compared with all other constituencies in Krishna, Guntur and West Godavari districts.A big factor was Kammas, the traditional the TDP vote bank. Many commercial entities have been pouring money into the region since the National Highway 65 is getting spruced up to four-lane.The mandal is situated on the Krishna riverside and is bounded by Vijayawada Urban, Vijayawada Rural and Kankipadu mandals. Tenements are there on the banks of Krishna river for more than three decades in the region. But residents continue to complain that they are waiting for houses promised them under the AP Housing Scheme.“We were promised houses before the next elections. Even tenders haven’t been finalized in Vuyyur area let alone beginning of construction,” said Gurram Ravi, a resident.Though the rate of population growth is going up in the region with the Bandar Road expansion, people in Poranki, Kannur and other areas in the constituency are saying there are not enough good roads or proper drainage facility.“We have not encroached upon riverside areas. We have land documents registered in our names but the government officials are not allowing us to build our own houses in the region.
