Competition for Srikalahasti set to be four-cornered

Tirupati: Srikalahasti in Chittoor district is set for a four-cornered contest in the upcoming elections. While the TDP has decided to field Bojjala Sudheer Reddy, son of five time MLA and sitting legislator Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy, YSRC will go to polls with Biyyapu Madhusudhan Reddy as its candidate from Srikalahasti.Meanwhile, in a strategic move BJP has chosen Kola Anand, former trust board chairman of the Srikalahasteeswara Swamy Devasthanams, as their candidate for the constituency.Anand, a local from Srikalahasti, enjoys a good following among the youths of several villages across the constituency and the BJP is banking on his popularity to win the seat.On the other hand, Jana Sena has fielded Vinutha Nagaram. Although a lesser known candidate both among the voters as well as in the political circles in Srikalahasti assembly , party leaders believe Pawan Kalyan’s charisma and the communist vote bank could work in her favour. But for TDP, number crunching and vote bank calculation in Srikalahasti is far from over.Their decision to retire Gopalakrishna Reddy and field his son Sudheer Reddy has not to be taken kindly by Srikalahasti’s former MLA SCV Naidu, who was desperate for a party ticket and was ready to revolt if the party denied him the ticket.Sources say that minutes after TDP announced Sudheer Reddy as its nominee, YSRC leaders, led by district strongman Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, held a meeting with SCV Naidu, hoping that he would quit the TDP and join YSRC.However, SCV Naidu is yet to take a decision on his future course of action, since YSRC has already announced its candidate from Srikalahasti. The TDP leadership for its own part is now on a damage control mode, considering the importance of the electoral outcome. It is trying its best to ensure that SCV Naidu does not leave the party as it would compromise TDP’s chances of victory in Srikalahasti.Meanwhile, the prospects of the winner in the constituency rely on which two weaker candidates are able to erode the vote share here in the 2019 elections.
