10 feared dead, several injured in blast at quarry in Kadapa

In a tragic incident, at least ten workers are feared to be dead while several others sustained injuries in a blast at a quarry in Andhra Pradesh`s Kadapa district on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses and locals told police that a group of workers were unloading large quantities of gelatine sticks from a vehicle which came from Badvel this morning when the explosion happened all of a sudden, leaving at least 10 workers dead.

The explosion shook off the entire region as villagers nearby noticed a thick patch of smoke emerging out of the byrites factory near the Mamillapalli village.


The bodies of the deceased workers were torn off into pieces and lay scattered all over the place and were beyond recognition.
After being informed about the incident, Kalasapadu police went to the spot immediately and shifted the deceased and the injured to the Badvel government hospital.

Kadapa SP, who reached the incident spot near Mamillapalli village later in the afternoon, said that six persons were confirmed dead in the blast reported at the byrites quarry.

"Family members of four persons have reported a missing complaint and we are trying to ascertain their whereabouts. It is feared at least 10 workers may be dead. A case has been registered at the Kalasapadu police station and investigation has begun." said Kadapa SP.

He added that they would also enquire if the quarry has all the necessary licenses besides the permission and the expertise to procure such large quantities of explosives.

Police confirmed the identities of five workers as Prasad (40) of Pulivendula, Subba Reddy (40), Bala Gangulu (35), Venkataramana (25) and Prasad (35) of Gangayapalle.
Meanwhile, allegations of over-exploitation of mines/byrites near the Kalasapadu village by the lessee surfaced once again after an RTI reply over various aspects pertaining to mining leases allotted by the mines and geology department of Kadapa went viral in the social media.
