the Krishna district administration and Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) have intensified the Covid-19 vaccination drive. Considering the huge rush at vaccination centres, officials have decided to establish 13 permanent vaccination centres in Vijayawada.

The civic body has decided to introduce a token system to regulate crowds at vaccine centres.

With the shortage of vaccines over the last two weeks, vaccination centres across the city are witnessing huge crowds. Many people who are scheduled to take the second dose of vaccine are rushing to nearby health centres, which is also adding to the turnout.

As per the state government’s instructions, the VMC authorities are heading to start 13 permanent vaccine centres at prime locations in the city.

The health wing has decided to introduce time slot-based vaccination to prevent rush at vaccine centres. Health workers will distribute tokens with time slots printed on them to the persons who are enrolled to take vaccine shot. “Vaccine centres are getting crowded as people panic about the second wave of Covid-19. Rush at these health centres will increase the risk of Covid-19 infection. Many people are waiting to take the second dose and we will give top priority to them,” said Dr Geetha Bhai, chief medical and health officer, VMC.

Health wing authorities said that around 5,000 people are getting vaccinated at VMC health centres presently and they are looking to increase the number soon.
