Andhra Pradesh's literacy rate lower than national average: Socio-economic Survey

  • | Friday | 21st May, 2021

The state’s literacy rate currently stands at 67.35 per cent, while the national rate is 72.98 per cent.

The literacy rate of the state is considerably lower than the national literacy rate, as per the 2021-22 socio-economic survey results. The state’s literacy rate currently stands at 67.35 per cent, while the national rate is 72.98 per cent.

The state, however, is ahead in terms of per capita income to some extent when compared to the national position. AP’s per capita income has grown from 1,68,480 in 2019-20 to 1,70,215 in 2020-21, as per the survey, which also shows some positive signs in GSDP growth which is projected at at 1.58 per cent against the national growth of 3.8 per cent.

Chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who released the socio-economic survey at his Tadepalli camp office on Wednesday, told officials to focus on improving the state’s literacy rate.

Stating that the government has taken up renovation of schools across the state under Nadu-Nedu, the CM asked officials to ensure that the state’s literacy rate moves upward from the current academic year.

The survey also shows agriculture, industry and peoples’ empowerment sectors as its focus areas, in which the party’s agenda, Navarathnalu, is a guiding force.

Besides Nadu-Nedu, the chief minister listed the welfare measures of the government under various schemes that can promote literacy rate and quality education in the state.

The survey also shows that AP, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, has been improving in all the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations for the state to be achieved by 2030. In the 2019 ranks given by the NITI Aayog, the state ranked first in two goals, ranked second in four goals and ranked third in one goal.

The state has also improved its ranking from fourth rank in 2018 to third in 2019 in the overall SDGs. It is also doing better in certain SDGs like providing clean water and sanitation to people; building peace, justice and strong institutions; providing good health; working for economic growth; working for climate change; and initiatives for poverty eradication.

The survey also projected an upward growth for the state in the industrial sector due to its initiatives like four major ports at Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Ramayapatnam and Bhavanapadu, besides providing 75 per cent jobs in industries to locals, financial support for the MSME sector during the pandemic and financial assistance to budding SC/ST entrepreneurs.
