Depressed after testing positive for Covid-19, a couple committed suicide by hanging themselves at their residence in Pedana town, in Krishna district, on Thursday night. The deceased were identified as Jakkula Leela Prasad (40) and his wife Bharathi (37). The incident came to light on Friday morning when their family members woke up and discovered the bodies.

Pedana police said Prasad and his wife has been suffering from fever and cough for the past 10 days and after testing positive for Covid-19 recently, were in home isolation for the last few days. Both are believed to have gone into depression while staying closeted in the room. They also feared that they might inadvertently pass on the infection to their children, which police suspect, may have led them to take the extreme step. The couple is survived by two daughters — the elder one is nine years old while the other is five.

Cops have registered a case under section 174 of CrPC (unnatural death) and are investigating. The bodies were taken to a local government hospital for post-mortem. Fear of Covid-19 and the stigma associated with it has resulted in several suicides across the state. Since March this year, the second wave has resulted in at least 11 confirmed suicides so far.
