30 seniors involved in attack on juniors at IIIT: probe panel

The special committee that inquired into the attack on junior students by seniors at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) IIIT Nuzvid, has submitted its report to Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachander Raju. The special committee headed by IIIT Administrative Officer Ramakanth conducted an inquiry into the allegations and recorded the statements of the victims as well as the seniors. The IIIT management has served notices to the parents of the students who were found guilty in the incident.

The alleged teasing of girls by some senior students at the Ganesh pandal on the campus led to trouble, and some E-4 (final year engineering) students entered into the hostel rooms of their juniors and attacked them on August 29. About 13 students suffered injuries in the incident. The special committee headed by IIIT Administrative Officer Ramakanth conducted an inquiry into the allegations and recorded the statements of the victims as well as the seniors. The committee also collected details from some teaching and non-teaching staff on the incident. 70 students questioned “As part of the inquiry, we questioned more than 70 students to know the cause of the incident. It has been observed that the attack occurred due to the unruly behaviour of some seniors on the campus,” said a committee member. It was revealed that more than 30 students were involved in the attack. Five students who created tension on the campus were identified and they would face serious action, the member said. “Recently, a final year engineering student was suspended for one year for stalking a girl student. The management has identified trouble-mongers on the campus and is tracking their movements,” said a senior faculty of the institute. The IIIT management has served notices to the parents of the students who were found guilty in the incident. The staff explained the mischievous behaviour of their wards and the students were sent home. Instructions have been given to the faculty, wardens and other staff to keep a vigil at canteens, dormitories and in the classrooms after the incident. “The committee has submitted a detailed report and recommended action against the mischievous students. The VC may take a decision on the committee’s report,” the faculty said.
