more-in Newly-elected president of Visakhapatnam Bar Association Bandaru Ramakrishna said on Thursday that his priority was to put pressure on the government to establish High Court bench in Visakhapatnam. “Visakhapatnam has the largest bar with highest number of advocates and courts in Andhra Pradesh. In fact, our main demand was to have new HC in the city but due to the government’s decision to locate it, we are insisting on a bench here,” he told The Hindu on Thursday. He said before bifurcation itself, Visakhapatnam Bar Association had spearheaded an agitation to set up the bench in the city. Though the counting for votes began on Wednesday evening immediately after the elections, the announcement of result was delayed due to slow process adopted this time for counting. While J.V. Raghavendra will be the vice-president, Pappu Anuradha has been elected general secretary for 2017-18. Mr. Ramakrishna said the new team would fight for increasing the compensation given to families of advocates in the event of demise from the Advocates’ Welfare Fund. “Now an amount of ?3 lakh is given which we want it increased to ?10 lakh,” he said. The fund is also meant to give an aid of ?10,000 if an advocate needs for hospital expenses.
