Walk, rallies mark World Earth Day

To highlight this year’s theme for World Earth Day -- ‘End plastic pollution’ -- a number of students and members of NGOs took out a rally on Beach Road on Sunday. The observation of Earth Day, started in the United States of America on April 22, 1970, is a global movement today spreading across 192 nations. It was by the 1990s that Earth Day went global and it is on this day that millions of people across the globe pledge to protect the planet earth and individuals and organisations take out awareness campaign on environment protection. Ramana, an engineering student who took part in the walk. Flagging off the walk, Ms. Srijana said that people need to be educated to take the responsibility by choosing to reject, reduce, reuse and recycle plastics. A number of schools and colleges observed the day on Saturday and students of some schools also organised a beach clean-up on Sunday. “This is our planet and it is our responsibility to see that it stays healthy. Plastic is an hazard for its health and we need to take the initiative to see that we minimise the use of plastic,” said Gayatri. a student of Class V. A.P. Pollution Control Board organised a green rally on Beach Road. District In charge Collector G. Srijana inaugurated the rally at the NTR statue. Students, representatives of various industries and hospitals and PCB employees participated in the rally.
