Extremely heavy rain in next two days warns IMD

Visakhapatnam: Heavy to extremely heavy rain is likely to lash isolated places over districts of north-coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next two days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.Under strong monsoon conditions and a low pressure area over the northwest Bay Of Bengal, strong surface winds from the west reaching speeds of 45 to 50 kmph are likely along and off the AP coast, the IMD bulletin said, advising fishermen to be cautious while venturing into the sea.The collector’s office instructed the fisheries department to be on alert and pass on the advisory to all fishermen in the district.On Friday, heavy rain lashed the city and surrounding districts with Nandigam in Srikakulam district receiving the state's highest rainfall of 81.75mm. Araku Valley in Visakhapatnam district received 56mm of rainfall.IMD officials said the heavy rainfall was due to the formation of a low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal.An official from the Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC) said parts of Vizag city also received continuous showers since early Friday.Officials said it is for the first time this month that the city experienced such day-long showers under the influence of the active southwest monsoon.The average rainfall reported in the city was about 20mm while areas like MVP Circle received 13.25mm of rainfall on Friday.A senior official from Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) said special teams were deployed at places where rainwater was overflowing from drainage canals.
