Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (Vuda) has appointed Rites Limited as the project management consultant (PMC) for its ambitious multi-level grade separator (flyover) at busy NAD junction. The Vuda Board, in its recent meeting in Amaravati, gave its nod to availing the services of ‘Rites’, a Union government enterprise under the aegis of Indian Railways, for the flyover construction. While the foundation stone was laid by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu in October 2017, civil work of the flyover began in April, this year. Currently, work is on at a good pace and so far five pillars have been built. The bus shelters in the vicinity are being removed on the other sides of the road to pave way for more pillars.According a senior Vuda official, the PMC will assist Vuda in construction supervision, quality assurance and auditing of the designs of the flyover. It will also extend its help to the contractor of the project in obtaining necessary permissions and approvals. “Now, the PMC will be on the site on a continuous basis. It will play the role of a specialist in the execution of the project. The PMC will help in fast and effective completion of the work. The work includes construction of a new rail overbridge, as the flyover needs another ROB to facilitate vehicle landing on the airport side, and the ‘Rites’ under the aegis of Indian Railways will be useful,” said the official. The composite level grade separator will get a sunken rotary just below ground-level with roads on all four sides, feeding into it, for light motor vehicles such as cars, two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws, etc. An elevated rotary will be constructed above the ground-level, connecting ramps on four sides of roads (two ramps each side of the road) at the Junction for heavy vehicles such as buses, lorries and others.Besides, the inception report, the consultant will prepare fortnightly progress reports, quarterly progress reports and final report in one month after completion of the project. The PMC will also take care of liaison meetings between the Vuda officials and the contractor at monthly intervals to deliberate on the contents of the progress reports, pertinent issues and financial matters. The flyover project was proposed in 2015 as a long-term measure to ease the ever-growing traffic in the busiest junction in the city.
