Visakhapatnam: With the general and assembly elections less than a year away, the ruling Telugu Desam Party is leaving no stone unturned to swing public mood in their favour through various outreach programmes like the launching of Anna canteens, unemployment dole scheme, Grama Darshini, affordable urban housing projects, increasing wages of contract/outsourcing employees in government departments, to name a few.The latest in the series of initiatives from the state government is ‘Jnana Bheri’, which is supposed to be an interactive programme between chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and students of various universities/institutions.While the government claims it is readying students to compete globally through the programme, opposition parties, students’ unions and political analysts are describing it as the TDP’s ‘Political Bheri’ in the election year to reach out to students — most of whom would be first-time voters. As part of the programme, Naidu will visit each state university on scheduled dates for which about 20,000 students from across the district will gather. The government will spend about Rs 10 crore on the programme in each district, which is expected to continue for 4-5 months. The initiative, which was launched in SV University on August 4, will be next held in Andhra University on August 20. A variety of programmes are planned to bring the best out of them,” said Srinivasa Rao.YSRC Vizag city president Malla Vijay Prasad said the programme is only aimed at attracting first-time voters.“If the state government is truly determined to make the state a knowledge hub, it should first upgrade research facilities and recruit faculty at state universities.”
