Visakhapatnam: The much-awaited Siemens Centre of Excellence will be inaugurated on August 23 by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.The centre, first-of-its kind in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, is expected to improve employment prospects of students of the region and enhance industry-academia partnership. “The students will get hands-on training in manufacturing and other industrial domains,” said Prof Rao.The varsity has tied up Siemens and Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation to set up the centre.

It will be open not only to the students of Andhra University but also other colleges of the region.While students of the varsity will be offered free training, students of other colleges will have to pay a nominal charge. Students trained at the centre will be given a certificate.Speaking to TOI, Andhra University vice chancellor Professor G Nageswara Rao said Siemens Centre of Excellence will equip students with the required competencies to suit industry needs and expectations. “The students will get hands-on training in manufacturing and other industrial domains,” said Prof Rao.The varsity has tied up Siemens and Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation to set up the centre. The German conglomerate will provide Rs 300 crore to build the integrated skill development infrastructure. Andhra University has already received about Rs 60 crore worth of heavy equipment for the centre. It has spent about Rs 5 crore from its own funds to create a space in various departments for the centre to function. While the centre at the Andhra University would act as the hub, five other universities or educational institutions will work under it.The centre will offer skill-based training in diverse industry segments like industrial machinery, industrial automation, automotives, etc. It will have the latest computer numerical controllers, programmable logic controllers, computer integrated manufacturing units comprising CNC milling and turning machines, software and rapid prototyping machines, etc.The centre, with 15 special labs, is designed as a complete learning solution facility to build specific skills and equip the students with expertise in engineering and the manufacturing sectors. Some of these 15 labs include robotics laboratory, instrumentation laboratory, prototype laboratory, CNC laboratory, etc.
