BENGALURU: A 13-year-old Bengaluru boy , who got a new lease of life when the heart of a 20-year-old from Visakhapatnam was transplanted into him, binge-watched films of his idol Rajinikanth to get over the post-surgery pain.The heart was airlifted on August 6 and transplanted into Kushal S on the same day at Fortis Hospital. The boy, from Moodalapalya in southwest Bengaluru, is doing well, said doctors. Kushal suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the ability to pump blood decreases due to a weakened heart.Dr Vivek Jawali, chairman, department of cardiovascular sciences, Fortis, said the heart was transported and transplanted into the patient in four hours and one minute, thanks to the efforts of interstate transplant coordinators and police who helped in creating a green corridor. “The boy recovered well watching Rajinikanth movies throughout his hospital stay,” said Dr Murali Chakravarthy, director, clinical affairs, Fortis.Dr MR Balakrshnan, director, cardiac sciences and chief cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon, Fortis hospital, Malar, who has performed over 270 heart transplants, said Kushal requires routine physiotherapy and a proper diet. Dr Jayaprakash Shenthar, the cardiologist who treated Kushal, suggested transplant for the boy. “His condition could not have been cured by medication so we convinced the family,” he said.Kushal hopes to get back to school in the next few months. “Initially, his only symptom was vomiting and no local clinic could diagnosed his condition. I’m glad he’s on the road to recovery,” said his mother Amuda Hari, who works in a garment factory. The cost of the surgery was borne by two NGOs and Fortis.
