Veggie imports rise as districtrsquos acreage shrinks

Visakhapatnam: Decreasing size of land holdings in the district has compelled traders to look to neighbouring districts such as Chittoor, Kurnool, East Godavari and Vizianagaram for their supply of vegetables. Leafy vegetables account for less than 1% of the import. Traders are also importing vegetables from West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra to meet the increasing demand in the city.Visakhapatnam has 13 Rythu Bazars, which import up to six-and-a-half tonnes of vegetables per day, of which potatoes and onions account for 60%. Vegetables such as ladies’ fingers, ivy gourd, and other regular vegetables account for the remaining 38%.Sources in the Rythu Bazars of Visakhapatnam said even gourds, green leaf veggies and Coccina Grandis and Okra are being chiefly imported from the neighbouring districts of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam.Sources in the horticulture department said this increase in imports can be chiefly attributed to the shrinking acreage of horticulture area in the district.
