Araku MLA Kidari Sarweswara Rao exMLA on visit to village shot dead by Maoists

VISAKHAPATNAM: In the first major strike against elected representatives in the two Telugu states in 13 years, CPI Maoists gunned down sitting Araku TDP MLA Kidari Sarweswara Rao and former Araku MLA Siveri Soma in the agency area of Visakhapatnam on Sunday afternoon. Police said Sarveswara Rao had not informed them about the visit to the agency area. The MLA did not inform us about his visit to Dumbriguda . “We have alerted all the people’s representatives to be careful well in advance in view of the Maoists formation day celebrations. “After we stopped, few persons carrying AK-47s threatened to kill us if we do not surrender our weapons,” Soma’s gunman A V A Swamy told TOI.

The last such attack took place in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district in August 2005 when Maoists killed Congress MLA C Narsi Reddy, and eight others, when he was inaugurating a school building near Narayanpet town.The killings happened during the CPI Maoists formation day (September 21) week being observed by the naxals. Police said Sarveswara Rao had not informed them about the visit to the agency area. “We have alerted all the people’s representatives to be careful well in advance in view of the Maoists formation day celebrations. The MLA did not inform us about his visit to Dumbriguda . We had information about the presence of Maoists leader Chalapati and others in various agency areas,” Visakha Rural SP Rahul Dev Sharma told TOI.According to sources, the incident took place between 12noon and 12.30pm at Lipiriputtu village, 2 km from Dumbriguda mandal headquarters, when 45-year-old MLA Sarveswara Rao and 52-yearold former MLA Soma along with Araku ZPTC member Kona Vanaja and some others had gone to Dumbriguda mandal from Araku in three vehicles.Around 70 people stopped the convoy at Lipiriputtu village road. “After we stopped, few persons carrying AK-47s threatened to kill us if we do not surrender our weapons,” Soma’s gunman A V A Swamy told TOI.
