The gold smuggled from Myanmar, which was seized by DRI officials in Visakhapatnam. more-in Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence have seized gold weighing 1992 gm being smuggled from Myanmar from a train passenger here, which was concealed in sheet and biscuit forms in two bags and a guitar. The value of the gold is estimated at ?62 lakh. On specific information, the DRI sleuths intercepted a passenger travelling from Guwahati to Chennai on Train No. 15630 in the early hours of Sunday at Visakhapatnam railway station, an official disclosed on Monday. Bound to Chennai Inquiries revealed that the passenger was reportedly entrusted with the job of smuggling the contraband from Yangon (Myanmar) near the Tio (Khawmawi)-Zokhawthar border into the country and was transporting it to Chennai to be handed over to certain unknown persons. The passenger reportedly confessed that the gold was smuggled and he did not have any valid documents pertaining to the gold. “A total of 1,992 gm of smuggled gold recovered from the passenger, valued at ?62,34,960 and ?1,66,000 being the sale proceeds of smuggled gold has been seized under the provisions of The Customs Act, 1962,” the official stated. The accused passenger has been apprehended. Investigation is on.
