He said that Jagan had promised to take up this project immediately after coming to power as it costs around Rs 1,600-Rs 2,000 crore. Guntur: In a bid to win over the people of Palnadu region, the stronghold of Telugu Desam Party, the opposition YSR Congress is promising to construct a comprehensive drinking water project covering all the assembly segments in Narasaraopet Lok Sabha constituency. The party has also readied the designs of the project with the help of private consultants. The campaign unleashed by the opposition party is already creating ripples in the region as the government had failed to release water for crops and drinking water even when the Nagarjuna Sagar project received full capacity water during the current season. The drinking water project has been designed to cover nearly 101 fluoride-hit habitations, 75 habitations with brackish water source and 737 habitations, which have been partially covered with drinking water schemes.Majority of the villages in Palnadu region, although, located right on the banks of Nagarjuna Sagar project, have been struggling to get a pot of potable water.“It is going to cost around Rs 1,600-Rs 2,000 crore. Our party supremo Jaganmohan Reddy is very excited to take up this project once he comes to power,” claimed Gurazala constituency in-charge of YSRCP, Kasu Mahesh Reddy. He explained that two mega treatment plants, one each at Nagarjuna Sagar and Prakasam barrage, would be constructed to provide treated bulk water to all the villages in Palnadu as well as Guntur city. While the treatment plant at Nagarjuna Sagar would have a capacity of 198 MLD, it would be 160 MLD plant at Prakasam barrage, he explained. At present, about 176 habitations have no safe water supply in the district.“Drinking water is generally perceived as social right rather than economic good as millions of people are spending lakhs of rupees on health due to the lack of safe drinking water. It is our promise to provide clean and safe water to the people of the district,” Mahesh Reddy told ‘TOI.’While the present population (Guntur district) is 44 lakh, rural population is around 34 lakh. Urban population is 10 lakh. The district has around 1,024 village panchayats. The scheme has been designed to cover 43.6 lakh rural population by 2025 (at 1% growth rate). It has been planned to supply 175MLD of water to rural areas and 139 MLD to urban areas. The detailed project report estimated that it would require at least 358 MLD of water to supply 11 assembly segments in the district. “The scheme will cover seven assembly segments in Narasaraopet Lok Sabha constituency and also cover Guntur city, Prattipadu and Tadikonda assembly segments,” said Reddy. He said that the entire water will be drawn on gravity basis as Nagarjuna Sagar is located at 175 metres above sea level while Piduguralla is at 105 metres, Narasaraopet is 70 metres, Chilakaluripet at 39 metres. Guntur city is just 31 metres above sea level while Prattipadu is 18 metres. He said that Jagan had promised to take up this project immediately after coming to power as it costs around Rs 1,600-Rs 2,000 crore. “It is part of Palnadu manifesto,” said Reddy, Gurazala constituency in-charge.
