Swine flu claims 2 in VZM, awareness drive launched

One of them was a three-month-old baby, who was also admitted in the hospital in Vizag.“After the two deaths, we have expanded a public awareness drive in the district. Visakhapatnam: Two people have died because of swine flu in Vizianagaram district, Korra Vijayalakshmi, Vizianagaram district medical health officer (DMHO) said on Monday, prompting the health authorities to expand their awareness campaign.Dr Vijayalakshmi told TOI on phone that the two deaths occurred on October 15 and 18, at the Government Hospital for Chest and Communicable Diseases here. Quarantine wards had been set up at the two hospitals, with 11 beds in. Over 2,500 masks has been distributed so far, she added.

The awareness campaign was launched by the district collector last week and it is being conducted in every mandal,” she said.She said the district had adequate supplies of medicine, including 500 tablets of Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) and 100 bottles of Tamiflu syrup (for children).She said that two screening centres had been set up at the Maharajah Hospital in Vizianagaram and the Government Hospital in Parvathipuram. Quarantine wards had been set up at the two hospitals, with 11 beds in. Over 2,500 masks has been distributed so far, she added.
