VISAKHAPATNAM: Coringa wildlife sanctuary in East Godavari district will be hosting a bird festival on a big scale, the first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh , on December 14 and 15 at Chollangi in the sanctuary. Bird portrait and model making, quizzes, documentary shows, puppetry shows on the biodiversity of Coringa, visit to the mangroves and bird walks will take place. One of the highlights of the festival will be a session by renowned wildlife photographer, filmmaker and conservationist Kalyan Varma. The two-day event is expected to be attended by bird experts of international repute who will hold special sessions.The event is being organised by the forest department and international wildlife organisations such as Egree Foundation and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). Indian skimmer , the official mascot of the festival, is also a key species of avifauna found in the region and is currently classified as vulnerable.Coringa is home to over 270 species of birds, including critically endangered ones.
