Cyclone Phethai Met predicts heavy rains in parts of Andhra Pradesh

The cyclone Phethai has higher chances of further intensification into a severe cyclone, the IMD added.It is the third cyclone in the northeast monsoon season.Chances are high that the cyclone is likely to make landfall in South coastal Andhra Pradesh. Heavy to heavy rains would occur along Chittoor, Prakasam and Nellore districts from December 15 to 17. VISAKHAPATNAM: The existing depression system over Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a cyclone over the sea itself by Friday, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). Nellore, Chittoor and Prakasam districts will be hit by the cyclone. "It is too early to predict the path and landfall point of the cyclone, but chances are high for its landfall over south coastal Andhra Pradesh," Naga Ratna told TOI.The fishermen have also been advised to not venture into the sea till further instructions.The chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu would hold a meeting with the officials at the Secretariat at Amaravati on Thursday night or Friday morning, the sources said.

It is located 1300kms away from Machilipatnam coast in Krishna district of the state.The system will move over the sea along the East Coast from the North Tamil Nadu to Andhra Pradesh coast.Under it's influence, moderate to heavy rains associated with winds are expected to occur over the south coastal and Rayalaseema districts of Andhra Pradesh, the IMD added.Speaking to TOI, Dr K Naga Ratna, IMD director (forecast), Hyderabad Centre, said that the present depression would be intensified into cyclone on Friday.
