GVMC gets sanction for new UGD project, will cover 7,000 households

In order to enhance this further, the GVMC is now planning to extend the UGD system. Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation ( GVMC ) will provide individual underground drainage connections to around 7,000 households under the Venkatapuram and Viman Nagar pumping stations’ command area.The state government has recently accorded its approval for the project, which will improve the underground drainage ( UGD ) cover of the city. The project in its entirety aims to lay sewers spanning 710 kilometres and providing 85,000 UGD connections in these three suburbs. According to GVMC officials, the project is estimated to cost around Rs 10 crore.The funds needed for the project will be drawn from the general funds of the corporation. The GVMC is currently in the midst of covering missing links of the existing underground drainage (UGD) network system of the city by providing 30,000 free household UGD connections.Even though the UGD system has been expanded to several parts of the city, some households were left out of the network due to several reasons.

This project is being taken up under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) with a budget of around Rs 30 crore. The corporation has already started work on around 10,000 connections.As per estimates, the existing UGD network covers around 40% of the city, including the newly merged Bheemili, Anakapalli and other peripheral villages.The UGD system currently covers 55% of the population in the city. In order to enhance this further, the GVMC is now planning to extend the UGD system. Tenders have been finalised for the first phase works of the hybrid sewerage system, which will cover Gajuwaka, Malkapuram and Pendurthi. The project in its entirety aims to lay sewers spanning 710 kilometres and providing 85,000 UGD connections in these three suburbs.
