Visakhapatnam: The state cabinet on Friday approved the allocation of 140 acres of land to set up a private university in Visakhapatnam district, namely Accord University The university will serve as a multidisciplinary educational institution. A medical school with a multispeciality hospital will also be part of the institution, but will be set up at a different location. The World Peace University is also in the process of procuring land in the district. Some land is also available in Vangali village in Sabbavaram mandal,” said the official.Several private institutions have shown an interest in setting up their campuses in the district after the state government brought out the Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2016. The main campus will offer courses in several disciplines, including engineering, arts and management.

The main campus will offer courses in several disciplines, including engineering, arts and management. The university will be set up by the education conglomerate, Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust, Tamil Nadu.The university has proposed an investment portfolio of Rs 5,000 crore and a student strength of 16,000 in the next 10 years. The state government has decided to allocate 70 acres of land at a cost of Rs 1 crore per acre in Yendada in Visakhapatnam city to the medical institution. It will receive another 70 acres of land in the rural parts of the district at Rs 10 lakh per acre.A district official said that some land has been identified for the health university in Yendada. “The university team has already visited the site. Some land is also available in Vangali village in Sabbavaram mandal,” said the official.Several private institutions have shown an interest in setting up their campuses in the district after the state government brought out the Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2016. The World Peace University is also in the process of procuring land in the district. Factors such as good air quality and road connectivity are supposed advantages for Visakhapatnam compared to other parts of the state.The university will be an addition to the numerous educational institutions in Visakhapatnam, including the Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam, Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, National Law University, Centurion University and Indian Maritime University.
