Visakhapatnam: After introducing the e-bicycle sharing system on a pilot basis at the RK beach stretch, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has decided to implement the project in 12 other parts of the city. These include, city railway station, RTC complex, Simhachalam foothills, both entries of Zoo Park, Kailasagiri ropeway, Gitam Deemed to be University, Vuda Park, etc. For the the public bicycle sharing (PBS) system 12 stations will be set up that will have 120 e-bikes. These areas were picked by the GVMC as they are strategically located. Most of them are noted tourist destinations and are some of the busiest parts of the city. The users can rent the e-bicycle at any station and returnit at any other station. Each cycle can run for 35 kilometres with a single charge. Riders need not worry about having enough energy left as they can also pedal the e-bikes. They will be charged Rs 20 for an hour and additional charges will be levied beyond that.Speaking to TOI, a GVMC Smart City official said the project will have other benefits in the long run, such as, reduced congestion, increased accessibility, and other health related benefits. “These stations will have facilities for cash and digital transactions. An application will be designed to provide information about the bicycle sharing system to the users that will also be linked to Google Maps and provide real-time tracking of e-cycles,” said the officials. The GVMC had earlier undertaken a planning study for the PBS system with the assistance of the World Resources Institute. As part of the study, an area of around 18 square kilometres in the central part of the city, including 6 square kilometres of the area-based development part of the Smart City project, was studied for the project. As part of the PBS, a smart card facility has been proposed for the users without smartphones. A central control system will be created to track the operations of the system on a real time basis. The e-bicycles will have several advanced facilities such as tracking real time movement, distance travelled, communicating with central control system, etc.
