The state government has already sounded an alarm and has requested the Union government to immediately send one crore doses. Health officials fear they may have to stop or reduce the number of daily inoculations if the state does not get fresh stocks from the Centre in the next one-two days. Meanwhile, the technical glitches pertaining to CoWIN online portal continued even on Wednesday.

Andhra Pradesh is fast running out of stock of Covid-19 vaccines. The state, which is currently administering about one lakh doses a day, is now left with only 3.06 lakh doses.

Several districts, particularly Nellore and West Godavari, experienced vaccine shortage on Wednesday. Even in Visakhapatnam, several private hospitals reported vaccine shortage.

The state has so far received 38,44,600 vaccine doses, both Covishield and Covaxin combined, from the Union government. “Due to shortage of vaccines in Nellore, the health department reallocated 5,000 doses from Kurnool and 5,000 from Visakhapatnam to Nellore to tide over the situation.

There is currently no shortage in other districts. AP will receive 2 lakh doses on April 8 on an immediate basis, and 10.58 lakh more doses around April 15. The 2 lakh doses would be immediately distributed to the districts,” said a health official.

While there was some hesitancy among people during the initial days of vaccine roll out, the demand for vaccination has suddenly shot up in the last two weeks due to the presumed second wave of Covid-19.

The vaccination drive has also been extended to all citizens aged 45 and above. Moreover, in a bid to increase the reach of the vaccination drive, the AP government has started giving the jabs at ward secretariats too. All these factors have led to increased demand.
