Haleem makers say that the rising prices of red meat and other ingredients has forced them to raise prices by 30–40% compared to 2019. However, they are hopeful of brink business this year. Businesses have hired Haleem makers from Hyderabad to make the perfect recipe.

The ever-popular Hyderabadi delicacy — Haleem — has turned a little pricey this Ramzan season in various parts of Vizag. But Haleem lovers say that price is not an issue for the lip-smacking seasonal delicacy. Many are even ready to double down on it this year having missed it last year due to the pandemic curbs in place.

Haleem makers say that the rising prices of red meat and other ingredients has forced them to raise prices by 30–40% compared to 2019. However, they are hopeful of brink business this year. Businesses have hired Haleem makers from Hyderabad to make the perfect recipe.

Sheik Zuber of Dil Se Hyderabadi Haleem centre, located near Mecca Masjid in Vizag, says that the lockdown hit their business in 2020. “We expect good business this time. With rising prices of chicken and mutton as well as spices and other input costs, we have raised the price of Haleem this year,” said Zuber.

Haleem is sold in packs of different sizes. A small pack of chicken Haleem costs around Rs 80, a medium pack Rs 150 and a family pack Rs 100. Mutton Haleem in a small pack comes at Rs 150, in a medium pack at Rs 300 and a family pack at Rs 400.

Haleem makers say that the price of mutton has gone up to Rs 800 a kilo and even chicken costs Rs 250 a kilo. “Normally, we procure special herbs from Delhi and other parts of the country much before Ramzan to give the Haleem its unique taste and flavour. Haleem may cost a bit more this year,” said owner of another Haleem centre.

“For me, the Ramzan month brings an opportunity to relish the delicious mutton Haleem with my friends at various restaurants in the city. Last year, we missed out on it. This year, though Haleem is a bit costly, we are ready to cough up a bit more for the delightful dish,” said D Sudhakar, a resident of Vizag.
