more-in The doyen of Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam and Odissi Yamini Krishnamurthy says she is completely drawn to the Classical dance form as much as she was during her younger days. “It’s just that we become wiser over the years. However, the love for the art form remains unaffected and so is the enthusiasm to groom the younger generation in Classical dance,” says the dancer who came to the city to receive the Natya Vidya Bharathi Award. Growing up in Chidambaram where the Thillai Nataraja temple turned out to be her favourite hangout spot, Dr. Yamini says dance came naturally to her. “But doing what one is passionate about makes one experience the infinite bliss. That way, I consider myself fortunate as not many get a chance to learn under the tutelage of the renowned Gurus such as Venu Gopal Sharma and Kittappa Pillai and equally encouraged by a doting father who left his job to help me realise my dreams,” recalls the dance exponent. Bestowed with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, the Classical dancer says receiving the Natya Vidya Bharathi award instituted by the Visakha Music and Dance Academy from Co-Chairman of Kasturi and Sons Limited and president of The Music Academy, Madras N. Murali makes her feel overwhelmed. “I have been devoted to dance all through my life. What matters the most along with the performance is one’s attitude and commitment towards the art form. Getting recognised for my dedication at this age is like a rebirth to an artiste,” says Dr. Yamini. Mini Paris Of all the cities in Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Yamini considers Visakhapatnam a beautiful destination. “I have come here a couple times before to perform dance. There were times when I used to walk along the beach road with my father M. Krishnamurthy and have fond memories associated with the City of Destiny. For me, Vizag serves as a good holiday spot like mini Paris,” Dr. Yamini told The Hindu. Her academy Nritya Kaustubha Cultural Society in New Delhi has groomed hundreds of disciples in Classical art forms. “It’s my father’s endeavour and my contribution to society as well. I think every person should learn to dance at least a little bit as it allows one to emote, be themselves and stay happy,” she opines. For the younger generation, the dance exponent says it is important to listen to one’s intuition while choosing a career.
