IND v PAK: Recap of World Cup encounters between the two sides

 India and Pakistan are ready to face each other in their first world cup meeting of 2019 World Cup at Old Trafford Cricket Ground on Sunday. India that began its tournament campaign against South Africa is coming into this match after two victories and a washout against New Zealand, while Pakistan that began its 2019 world cup journey with the loss against West Indies is entering in the match after their recent defeat against Australia.

World Cup 1992: India won by 43 runs


India and Pakistan faced each other first time in the World Cup in the 16th match of 1992 World Cup that was played on March 4. Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and elected to bat first.


Opening with Ajay Jadeja and K Srikkanth India lost its two wickets at the score of 86 runs. Jadeja scored 46 runs and Sachin's not out 54 took India to the total of 216 runs after losing 7 wickets.


Chasing the target of 217 runs, Aamer Sohail scored maximum 62 runs but playing Indian bowlers was not easy he got this on 95 bowls. With brilliant bowling from Kapil Dev who got 2 wickets at the economy of 3 and M Prabhakar, Pakistan lost its 2 wickets at just 17 runs and the trend of wickets continued. Pakistan got all out for 173, losing last eight wickets for just 68 runs.


World Cup 1996: India won by 39 runs


The two teams witnessed their second encounter in the second quarterfinal of 1996 world cup on March 9. Indian skipper Azharuddin won the toss and elected to bat first at the Chinnaswamy stadium, Bangalore.


India got a good start with 90 runs partnership between NS Sidhu and Sachin Tendulkar. Sidhu was the highest scorer with 93 runs and with contributions from other players, India posted a good total of 287 runs after losing 8 wickets.


Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar gave a good start to Pakistan with the partnership of 80 runs. After losing some wickets frequently Saleem Malik and Javed Miandad got a good score for the team but the team failed to chase the total and Pakistan managed only 248 runs in 49 overs.
Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble picked up three wickets each as India registered a comfortable 38-run victory.

 

World Cup 1999: India beat Pakistan by 47 runs


India faced Pakistan at the Old Trafford in Manchester on June 8 in 1999 World Cup. Azharuddin won the toss and elected to bat first in bowler-friendly conditions.


Indian innings began with Sachin Tendulkar and S Ramesh. Sachin got 45 runs Rahul Dravid 61 and skipper Azharuddin got 59 runs. With these scores, India posted a total of 227 runs after losing 6 wickets.


Chasing the total, Pakistan lost its 3 wickets at the score of just 52 runs. Saeed Anwar scored 36 runs and Inzamam ul Haq scored 41 runs. Pakistan's fall of wickets continued and the team could manage to get up to 180 runs.BKV Prasad took 5 wickets at the economy of 2.84

World Cup 2003: India won by 6 wickets

The fourth encounter in the World Cup between these two teams was at Centurion during the 2003 World Cup. Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis won the toss and opted to bat first.


Batting first, Saeed Anwar got 101 runs off 126 balls but no other batsmen could make a grip on the crease for a longer time and Pakistan finished at the score of 273.


In Indian innings Pakistan came into the game as their skipper bagged two in two, removing Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly to reduce India to 53/2. But Sachin Tendulkar 's 98 runs and Yuvraj's not out 50 runs brought India closure to target. India won the match with 5 overs remaining in the match.


World Cup 2011: India won by 29 runs

India and Pakistan met each other in the second semifinal of 2011 world cup on March 30. Indian skipper Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first.


India began its innings with Virendra Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Sehwag got quick 38 runs off 25 balls and Sachin scored 85 runs. Suresh Raina's 39-ball unbeaten 36 took India to 260/9 in 50 overs.


Chasing the total none of the Pakistan batsman got decent score, with Hafeez's 43 and Misbah ul Haq's 56 runs Pakistan got all out at 231. Sachin Tendulkar was presented with the 'man of the match' award as India went on to celebrate a 29-run win.

 


World Cup 2015: India won by 76 runs

Defending champions India began their 2015 World Cup quest against Pakistan in Adelaide. MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to defend on a flat-track.


After India lost Rohit Sharma early, the innings were managed by a 129-run partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli. Dhawan scored 73 runs and Kohli went on to score 107 runs. The Indian innings finished on a high as Suresh Raina contributed with a 56-ball 74 as the Men in Blue put up 300/7 from 50 overs.


Chasing a huge total, Pakistan lost Younis Khan cheaply with the score on 11. Ahmed Shehzad and Haris Sohail put up 68 for the second wicket until both were removed in a space of six overs. Misbah-ul-Haq's 76 was the only other score of importance as Pakistan was got all out at just 224, courtesy of Mohammad Shami's incisive four-wicket haul.
